10 Ratings Blurbs: 3/25/14 Edition

I'm thinking about changing the layout of this site. I'm not sure what that layout will be or when it will happen but it will probably be within the next couple of months. Of course that little announcement had nothing to do with this post but I'm short on introductions this week.

1. Bad Girls All Star Battle (1.039 million 0.5)- In the grand scheme of things, this show stayed in a fairly tight window as it pertained to ratings and given their other shows that have either premiered or returned this year, the people at Oxygen still don’t have much to be proud of. Oxygen would be lying to themselves if they thought that this show would be anything other than a fan show (much like The Challenge is to MTV). Still I get the feeling Oxygen is still struggling with that internal identity crisis that keeps them from wanting to be The Bad Girls Network even though that seems to be the only thing that works. It may come down to how aggressive Oxygen plans to be with their expansion of Preachers of LA and if they believe the life of Bad Girls Club is shorter than they want the public to believe.

2. Teen Wolf (2.255 million 0.9)- This season has showed that this is one of MTV’s strongest shows. Now MTV claims the show will return but with a shorter season (only 12 episodes compared to the 24 this season had) and that may be a good thing. They don’t need to burn this show out.

3. Single Ladies (1.963 million 0.9)- I’m going to continue to maintain that VH1 ended this show over financial reasons. The ratings for this second half of the season have been weak (mostly due to Love & Hip Hop ending and Basketball Wives: LA beginning) but I don’t think VH1 will find very much redemption for their decision to end this show over the next 4-6 weeks with their 3 replacements (It is my belief that Family Hustle will try to hold on to most of the Basketball Wives: LA audience but likely not grow too much if at all from it, Black Ink Crew will shed a few viewers from that and then This Is Hot 97 will be the odd show out and will probably flop because it’s the 4th show of the night).

4. Duck Dynasty (4.711 million 1.9)- I know this show is petering out much faster than A&E hoped it would but that’s the gamble a network takes when they get a big show on their hands. While most simply go the route of expansion, A&E stuck to the main show and didn’t do much with it. I can’t say it was a bad strategy because the show at its peak was strong but perhaps the controversy has left the network seriously wondering what they are going to do since the end will probably be sooner than they expected (I should add that these ratings are still very good and the show is still the highest rated show on the network but the glory days are behind it).

5. Chicago PD (5.74 million 1.4)- While this is actually reflective of a bad week, it’s not much of a surprise that NBC renewed this show. It fits well with Law & Order: SVU and has shown that it doesn’t need Chicago Fire to survive. That is not to say that the show has become independent quite yet so NBC will have to be smart when they consider where this goes on the schedule next year.

6. Glee (2.80 million 1.1)- I believe I put this here because I was under the impression that this was supposed to be some sort of milestone episode or something like that and this was all the show could muster up. If this was cable this would be good but as a veteran broadcast show this is atrocious. Still this isn’t the only mistake FOX is setting themselves up to experience next season.

7. Switched At Birth (1.300 million 0.6)- I’m not sure what has happened in the last month or so but this show (and The Fosters) appear to have collapsed. Both shows are due to return in a couple of months but this could be problematic should this trend continue in the summer.

8. Drop Dead Diva (Premiere: 1.111 million 0.3; Episode 2; 1.165 million 0.3)- This is pretty low for a premiere but I think Lifetime was expecting it. The show returned fairly quickly from the fall set of episodes but since this is the final season not much will be expected here.

9. Chicago Fire (6.96 million 1.9)- It is also not a surprise that this show got renewed. This is the mothership and it has spent much of this season airing on the same night as The Voice. Now that the comedies have started it does look a little better as a standalone show but NBC should seriously consider not stretching this franchise too thin too soon (rumors of a third show are already circulating).

10. Pretty Little Liars (3.116 million 1.3)- We all know the deal with this show. It puts up great premiere and finale numbers, the in-season numbers fall in a predictable area and the Halloween special is somewhere in between. The show will be back in less than 2 months to repeat the cycle.
