10 Ratings Blurbs: 3/18/14 Edition

This week seemed to bring out the critic in me. It's mostly because it's because quite a few of these shows have surprisingly low ratings and in a couple of cases the networks they air on know and choose to ignore this fact.

1. Dancing with the Stars (15.44 million 2.6)- ABC knows that finding a show that can pull over 10 million viewers in this climate is difficult. The demo leaves a lot to be desired but that’s been the situation surrounding this show for a few years now. It’s best to reserve judgment until I see some more numbers.

2. Hell’s Kitchen (5.45 million 2.0)- FOX is in such terrible shape this year that this is actually really good. I do think it will drop a little in the coming weeks but again the bar for FOX is set so low that it will be very hard to criticize any ratings declines this show may take this season (Not that it matters because I think this show is already renewed for another season anyway).

3. Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory (1.407 million 0.7)- Well this isn’t a huge number for a series finale but given how Ridiculousness is doing this is an ok number and it was to be expected. Still doesn’t matter much. MTV loves Rob Drydek and they will continue to let him do whatever he wants to do.

4. The Following (3.95 million 1.4)- FOX pulled the trigger and renewed this show far too soon (as they did with Glee, The Mindy Project and Brooklyn Nine-Nine...New Girl too but that needed a 4th season for syndication purposes so it couldn't be avoided). Well FOX is headed for a very rocky season next year and I don’t think they have anything that can save them.

5. Elementary (8.94 million 1.7)- As I’ve said before, CBS renewing this show was not going to be a surprise. Now they have hinted that this show will be moving but where is anyone’s guess. While some think it will be a new occupant to the Sunday/Friday syndication farm (most likely Sunday). I think they need to take the chance to shore up (as best as they can) 10pm Mondays since they know what they are getting out of this show and they will be under a lot of pressure to renew this show next season even with low ratings.

6. The Americans (1.266 million 0.4)- A lot of the time I don’t say anything about non-rookie cable scripted shows because the ratings are boring outside of the premiere and the finale but I have to say something now because these numbers are not good. When the demo of this show is coming dangerously close to their comedies (and FX will consider renewing a comedy with a 0.3 demo but not so much for a drama) that’s not all that good. The ratings are going to need to perk back up or fans are going to be in for a rude awakening when this show gets canceled.

7. Two and a Half Men (9.43 million 2.4)- This show’s renewal was also not in doubt. Yes the show is old and yes basically the show is only down to 1 original headliner but CBS likes Chuck Lorre and they will do what it takes to keep him happy so that he may produce more comedies for them. The only thing in doubt for this show is if CBS will announce if the next season will also be the last (because there are strong rumors going around about that).

8. Real Housewives of NYC (1.329 million 0.5)- I remember the premiere numbers for last season being pretty low. I also remember the premiere numbers for last season weren’t this low. If you haven’t gotten the hint now, these are low. Bravo may have “retooled” themselves to death on this show because they have changed just about everything one can change about a show (minus the name) and nothing seems to be bringing the viewers back. Well since this show does have over 15 more episodes to air things can change but it’s in danger and this may be the year where Bravo is forced to admit that they are going to have to start cutting the dead weight from the Real Housewives franchise.

9. Dallas (1.779 million 0.5)- I picked this show to talk about this week because its ratings trend would be similar to that of The Americans (as I talked about above). Now this is up over last week and its situation is not as imminently dire as The Americans but after a good start it is beginning to get to a point where the numbers aren’t strong and the total viewers aren’t high enough at this point to keep overlooking the older-skewing demo. Again it is not dire but it’s approaching the danger zone.

10. Blood, Sweat and Heels (1.971 million 0.9)- This show puts Bravo in between a rock and a hard place. The raw numbers for this season puts this show into top 10 territory on the network (You could even make a case for top 5) and that works in a show’s favor when it’s not a Real Housewives show. However the drawback is that this show is behind the highest rated season of the highest rated show on the network and while the shows appear compatible on the surface this one struggles to hold on to 40-50% of the RHOA audience. That means should they renew it, it can only air behind RHOA because it hasn’t shown that it can survive under any other circumstances, but should they cancel it the decision looks bad since they would look picky knowing that over half of their shows don’t get over 1.5 million viewers.
