10 Ratings Blurbs: 1/8/19 Edition

I'm back for the new year and I've got some premieres to talk about. The broadcast shows aren't back yet, but there's plenty of content on cable to get into.

1. America’s Got Talent: The Champions (9.962 million 1.8)- NBC was praised for years for holding out and only doing a yearly summer season of this show. The reason for the praise was because it would keep the show fresh for a longer period of time. I don’t think there was any doubt that the show wouldn’t do decently here. These numbers are just a little off from its normal summer numbers. If they hold, will NBC be tempted to keep doing winter seasons of the show to prop up what is typically a very weak point in the schedule for them?

2. Black Ink Crew Chicago (1.071 million 0.6)- I personally think VH1 should have held this off until the spring and just let Love & Hip Hop Miami air alone, but they obviously didn’t want to do that. Last season, these numbers were a little shaky, but it held down the night just fine. Now with two franchise shows airing together on the same night again (these two specific shows have never aired on the same night together. I’m simply referring to the Love & Hip Hop/Black Ink Crew pairings of the past), I’m not sure that they will do much to help each other out.

3. Floribama Shore (787,000 0.4)- This is a weird little show. It didn’t look like it was taking advantage of the Jersey Shore Family Vacation pairing, but now that the show is done for the season, this show looks like it really didn’t need the help in the first place. It is another one of those MTV shows that doesn’t look like a hit, but it isn’t a flop either and that’s why it will stay around for as long as it can.

4. Cartel Crew (953,000 0.5)- I will admit that I was a skeptic when I first heard about this show. I just didn’t think it was compelling enough to hold on to a Love & Hip Hop audience that is already beginning to sour on the franchise as a whole. These aren’t good numbers for a Monday premiere and I feel like there’s cause for concern if the numbers don’t improve.

5. Vanderpump Rules (1.304 million 0.5)- This had to go through some weird scheduling over the holidays, but that turmoil is over and the show is now going to have a chance to settle down. For now, the numbers are in a normal place for what we have seen from this show.

6. RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars (488,000 0.2)- I can see why the previous week’s episode did so well (it was one of the few new episodes of any show on TV that week). I don’t understand why that momentum didn’t carry over to this episode. I said it was a mistake to premiere the show in mid-December and so far, I’m being proven right.

7. Project Runway All Stars (803,000 0.2)- I’m not surprised that these numbers are sluggish. The show has been off the air for months and because of the whole Harvey Weinstein fallout, this is the final season of the show. It appears that Bravo didn’t want this show and since it was already renewed, Lifetime was stuck with it. All they can do now is air it.

8. Love & Hip Hop Miami (1.088 million 0.6)- It should not come as a surprise that the numbers have dropped from last season. Wednesday is a lower profile night than Mondays. Since the Black Ink Crew shows have already established the benchmark for the night, I’m going to believe that an acceptable range for this show is between 900,000 and 1.3 million viewers.

9. Gotham (2.543 million 0.7)- These numbers look to be in line with what it was getting for most of last season. If the numbers go down, it doesn’t matter. It is the final season and FOX doesn’t care about Thursday nights the way the other broadcast networks care.

10. Grown & Sexy (Premiere: 169,000 0.1; Episode 2: 118,000 0.1)- From the description I read about this show, I don’t believe VH1 had too much faith in how the end product turned out. If they did, they would have put this on Wednesday nights at least. These numbers probably confirm their fears. I can’t see it staying on air for too much longer.
