10 Ratings Blurbs: 1/15/19 Edition

I wasn't sure I was going to be able to do a whole list today. Somehow I managed to pull one together without repeating shows from last week.

1. The Haves and the Have Nots (1.694 million 0.4)- This went up against the big speech last week. It will more than likely be forced to go up against another big speech in 2 weeks. In the past, it has held up well and I’m not seeing anything in these premiere numbers that make me think that this show is doing anything beyond showing its age a little bit.

2. Married to Medicine (1.641 million 0.6)- I don’t know whether to find it sad or laughable with this show’s numbers. These are the best numbers of the season. The last 2 weeks are also the best spot that the show has aired in for much of the season. This show fits very well with RHOA in ways that other shows just have not displayed. This show can also do reasonably well by itself. Bravo should just realize that the show needs to be on Sunday nights (with or without RHOA) and end all the wacky schedule moves.

3. Love & Hip Hop (1.445 million 0.7)- This is up from the last couple of weeks but still off from its pre-holiday levels. The show is clearly trending towards averaging lower than last season and with the start of this year now underway, VH1 has to start wondering what they have coming down the pipeline that might slow down their ratings slide.

4. Teen Mom 2 (1.184 million 0.7)- This isn’t too different from how the other Teen Mom show performs for MTV these days. The people at MTV may not be jumping for joy, but at least they know they still have yet another old show that can deliver some reliable numbers.

5. Real Housewives of New Jersey (1.285 million 0.5)- These numbers have held pretty steady over the last month or so. I would imagine that the network heads would prefer to see this show do a little better, but they aren’t going to be terribly alarmed by what they are seeing here.

6. Marriage Boot Camp: Hip Hop Edition (652,000 0.3)- A different night and a cast comprised entirely of people who used to be on Love & Hip Hop turned out (at least preliminarily) to be a modest success. Thursdays are supposed to be the strongest night for WE, but their Growing Up Hip Hop franchise has not turned out to be as promising as originally hoped. I’m not saying those shows are flops, but I’m also not sure they are satisfied with a ceiling of 650k when they have a few other shows that can do better.

7. Real Housewives of Atlanta (2.228 million 0.8)- There are always rumors about the casts of these Real Housewives shows. It’s rare when you see casting rumors pop up in the middle of the season, but when they show up, it is usually because the network is unhappy with the ratings. The rumors begin as a means of trying to figure out what former fans actually want. Usually, the networks and producers glean the wrong message and their moves tend to backfire, but they need to be careful here. There is a ratings slump here. Some of that can definitely be attributed to cast changes, but some of it is just because ratings are down everywhere and this show has been on for 11 seasons.

8. Return to Amish (1.045 million 0.3)- I’m not entirely sure what the expectations were from this season of this show, but I can’t say that the numbers were a disappointment. It aired the bulk of its season over the holidays. Reality shows on TLC tend to have the same old leaning skew and there’s no argument to be made for or against the show. If the network wants it to return, it will return.

9. Chicago P.D. (6.861 million 1.0)- This is definitely going to spend the rest of the season being the weak link of the three Chicago shows, but it airs at 10pm and that is a challenge for all broadcast shows. Right now, the numbers are okay. There isn’t a tremendous amount of separation between the three shows and the show hasn’t dipped into troubling territory yet.

10. Hell’s Kitchen (2.904 million 0.8)- This show just grinds along on Friday nights. It delivers the numbers you expect it to deliver and it does it without a whole lot of fanfare.
