10 Ratings Blurbs: 10/16/18 Edition

The CW finally kicks off their 2018-2019 season. Unlike last year, there were absolutely no surprises among the premieres.

1. The Flash (2.075 million 0.8)- These aren’t very strong numbers, but with all the CW premieres so far this week, the show proves that it is still on top. Knowing that, the show shouldn’t be in any real danger, but expect series low numbers at some point this season.

2. American Horror Story: Apocalypse (2.116 million 1.0)- This has managed to hold on to its numbers after that second week drop. Every little bit helps and these are pretty good numbers for Wednesday nights. FX has to be pleased with how the season is progressing so far.

3. Supergirl (1.523 million 0.5)- The last time The CW tried to premiere a show on Sundays, they had already given up on the night and they were interested in throwing variety/reality shows to fill the space. It was such a disaster that the next season, they gave Saturday and Sunday nights back to the local affiliates. For a return, this isn’t bad. The show hit all the benchmarks (stay within the network average, help out Charmed, and do better than a 0.3 demo on the night). The numbers may not stay here, but no one will hit the alarm until either one of those shows hit the 0.2-0.3 demo range. If that happens, then it will come down to how many other shows are flirting with that mark too. The game on The CW is strength in numbers (actual numbers and how many shows are getting the same numbers).

4. Remy & Papoose: Meet the Mackies (979,000 0.4)- As far as specials go, this wasn’t the worst experiment for VH1. They found themselves in a very light 9pm period in their schedule during what is probably the roughest time of the year. I don’t see this working as a full series with these numbers (unless the show aired on Wednesdays). They can do more Love & Hip Hop spinoff specials, but it doesn’t appear that anyone is deserving of a full series.

5. Supernatural (1.492 million 0.5)- There aren’t too many versatile shows on television (Ridiculousness is one of them). This is another one of those shows. What will continue to be an enduring narrative here is that the show is a survivor. It survived the network change. It survived a network president trying to kill it by moving it to Friday nights. It survived moving all around the CW schedule as the network tried to rebrand and rebuild under a new president. It has even survived years of uncertainty with the lead actors openly questioning how long they should continue to stay on the show. I don’t know what this season holds for the show, but even if it stays in the background, it at least furthers the narrative that the show will have done just enough to keep surviving.

6. Riverdale (1.504 million 0.5)- These aren’t the shock premiere numbers that the show put up last year, but they aren’t horrible. As with most CW shows, the goal is to stay within the middle of the pack, but this show will be safer than most others because it’s a third season show.

7. Arrow (1.429 million 0.4)- This may be the show to pay attention to this season. It is the oldest of The CW DC universe shows and the numbers have lagged slightly behind the pack for a while now. I think we have reached the point where there are too many shows of the same type on the network and if there’s a chance that one has to go this season, this one might be at the top of the list.

8. Black Lightning (1.161 million 0.4)- When you’re dealing with margins as small as The CW works with, this is a little alarming for a premiere of a second season show. It doesn’t have the security of the immediate prospect of syndication and it is already placed behind the highest rated show on the network. As long as it maintains these numbers, it will skate by easily. If it starts showing erosion before the winter break, it might be time to worry a little bit.

9. Real Housewives of Dallas (675,000 0.3)- This show proves that we are in a new era of television ratings. If this show had premiered 2-3 years before it did, it would not have survived the first season. The numbers have never been great, but Bravo doesn’t care. It doesn’t look like they are going to try to expand the franchise with new cities in the near future, but it also doesn’t look like they want to part with any of their existing shows either.

10. Teen Mom: Young & Pregnant (10:00: 646,000 0.4; 11:00: 490,000 0.3)- I was unaware that this was returning last night. It seems like the fans might have been caught off guard that it was two hours long. I’m not incredibly concerned about that 11pm showing and the 10pm episode isn’t anything special, but MTV could do much worse.
