10 Ratings Blurbs: 3/21/17 Edition

After being delayed by 2 days last week, an hour doesn't seem all that bad this week.

1. Dancing with the Stars (12.089 million 2.1)- I’ve mentioned ABC’s drama troubles constantly. What often gets ignored is their reality shows. The reason may be because the network only chooses to air a handful of reality shows and mostly on Monday nights (with the exception of Shark Tank). Because reality can be an unpredictable genre, the network being conservative with when they air their reality shows may be the secret to why they have stayed on so long.

2. The Haves and the Have Nots (2.621 million 0.7)- Outside of Sundays, Tuesday nights are often the hardest nights to navigate for shows between January-March. Whereas the Sunday shows have to contend with award shows and events, Tuesdays are a lot less predictable because they often coincide with news specials or coverage (often times, unplanned outside of the yearly State of the Union address). This show took a few hits because of that, but it managed to post another reasonably strong half-season.

3. Braxton Family Values (1.027 million 0.4)- If this had premiered a month ago, this would have been the highest rated premiere of the year for WE. It isn’t, (Mama June: From Not to Hot had a better debut) but the network does need to keep seeing numbers like this to put together a decent spring.

4. Homeland (1.258 million 0.5)- It almost feels like the show gets lost on Sunday nights, but it’s holding up well for Showtime. The ratings haven’t seen any major fluctuations since the premiere.

5. Black Ink Crew (1.465 million 0.8)- The end of the season is approaching and the show managed to hit a season high. The numbers are still nowhere near they were last season, but they are fantastic for Wednesday nights. The move turned out to work in more ways than one (because America’s Next Top Model was renewed last week).

6. Bates Motel (1.360 million 0.5)- So far, it appears that the fans who have stayed with the show are determined to stay on until the end. When a network deals with a final season show, that is practically the standard they hope for.

7. Star (3.949 million 1.3)- The show is coming back for a second season. How or when the show comes back will remain a question until at least the upfronts in May. For now, I don’t see a scenario where this airs with Empire unless, FOX believes that Lethal Weapon deserves to carry another night (likely Thursdays) and they don’t have a high profile freshman to put on Wednesdays.

8. Supergirl (2.068 million 0.6)- I don’t expect to see next week’s episode get some kind of boost from the partial crossover with The Flash tonight. Maybe the network wishes the show was a bit stronger in the demo, but you won’t hear any complaints from them after trying for years to at least partially salvage Monday nights.

9. Chicago Justice (5.740 million 1.0)- Now that we are a few weeks removed from the premiere, we are beginning to see that this show isn’t as strong as the other three shows. A part of that can be blamed on the night it airs on, but the episodes where it had help haven’t generated sustainable interest either. I would say the numbers aren’t where NBC wants them to be, but it’s hard to imagine that the show is in the doghouse just yet.

10. The Originals (1.046 million 0.3)- These aren’t bad numbers. It’s about all you can say about the show for now because it’s hard to know what the network thinks of the show. There’s a fairly reasonable argument that this could be the final season for the show, but the people at The CW have shown that if they really want to keep a show, they will find a place for it somewhere.
