10 Ratings Blurbs: 2/20/19 Edition

The holiday delayed everything an extra day, but at least it gave me time to pull together a full list.

1. America’s Got Talent: The Champions (10.574 million 1.7)- This show did exactly what NBC expected it to do. It held down Monday nights without raising their anxiety levels. My concern is if the show performed a little too well and if it might temp them to do it again next winter.

2. Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (1.628 million 0.6)- As far as season openers go, this could have done a little better, but you’re also not going to see anyone trash these numbers. Bravo will consider holding on to these numbers for the next 3+ months to be a serious win for them.

3. The Walking Dead (4.538 million 1.7)- You know the show has lived a long, successful life when these numbers are what qualify as series lows. There are broadcast networks who want to see numbers like this for their shows. While I feel that there does need to be some sort of exit plan for the show, I can see why AMC continues to hang on for dear life. Networks today are much more hesitant to let go of a hit show than they were in the past because they know there are absolutely no guarantees that they can replace it with a show that will do half as well as the one they have.

4. The Challenge: War of the Worlds (783,000 0.5)- This show is off to a fairly decent start. This show has been on a long time and yet its ratings attrition is probably among the slowest I’ve ever seen in my time of looking at ratings. The fans of this show are extremely loyal and the nature of the show allows MTV to keep some elements the same while applying radical changes to other parts.

5. Don’t Be Tardy (Premiere: 1.213 million 0.5; Episode 2: 1.113 million 0.4)- These numbers are better than the show has performed for most of the last 3 or so seasons, but Bravo is known for schedule trickery. With that said, we’ll see how the show performs when it moves to its normal timeslot on Friday. I’m guessing that the ratings baseline for this show is that it needs to at least perform as well as the most recent season of Married to Medicine (the Friday numbers). If we go by past performances, it is not an impossible ask for this show.

6. Celebrity Big Brother (3.861 million 0.9)- I think CBS wasted their time here, but I won’t be surprised if they go for a season 3 because of time of year it airs. Late January/Early February is a nightmare for networks to try to schedule because of all the award shows and special events going on. For CBS, it is easier to just put most of their schedule on hiatus, air this show on all the random nights they need to fill and populate the rest of the time with specials and reruns.

7. Real Housewives of New Jersey (1.198 million 0.4)- This is one of those shows that probably looks like it struggled to get through the season on paper. I said that these numbers could have been better a month ago and I still agree with that sentiment. However, it would be delusional on my part to think that these numbers are going to keep the show from getting another season. If you’re looking for an announcement on when, my best guess is probably April when Bravo tends to renew most of their shows in bulk at the upfronts.

8. Rupaul’s Drag Race All Stars (598,000 0.3)- The numbers have been shaky all season, but I’m not particularly worried about the fate of the show. This show airs on Fridays and VH1 has seen some ratings erosion on their higher profile nights. I expect the show will be renewed, but it’s a little difficult to guess when. They could renew it with the launch of the new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race next week or they could wait until spring if they are planning to make an upfront presentation this year.

9. Love & Hip Hop Miami (1.098 million 0.5)- It would usually be in my nature to take shots at a show like Cartel Crew, but in my opinion, this show is the real underperformer. It was not a part of the plan to have this show depending on the help from the aging and ailing founder of the franchise. It is obvious that the move to Mondays was a face saving move to pull the numbers up a little bit so they can eventually justify renewing the show for season 3.

10. Project Runway All Stars (678,000 0.1)- I had to do a double take when I saw that 0.1 demo. It seemed a little off, but no, that’s the number (0.13 to be more specific). Because it is the final season, the numbers don’t mean much, but numbers like those are sure to make the people at Bravo feeling secure in their decision to only acquire the main show.
