10 Ratings Blurbs: 12/18/18 Edition

I can't promise that this is the last post of the year, but I can promise that I won't be posting anything the next 2 Tuesdays. Have a safe and hopefully drama-free holiday season.

1. Jersey Shore Family Vacation (1.170 million 0.7)- This did not do as well as the first half of the season, but it still does better than basically every other show on the network. That’s why it is coming back for another season. MTV is still in a space where they aren’t quite sure whether to keep appealing to carefree 20-somethings or if they should turn their appeal to those at or near 30 who still have an appetite for the carefree lifestyle, but recognize that life events happen and want to see those events reflected.

2. T.I. & Tiny: Friends & Family Hustle (9:00: 973,000 0.4; Finale: 820,000 0.4)- The numbers for this season really don’t warrant another season. My hesitation in thinking that this show isn’t a sure bet to be cancelled lies in the fact that VH1 seems to be trending in a similar direction that they wanted to go in 2010. Their big franchise isn’t as big as it was in the past and the shows are perhaps becoming a bit too trashy for their liking and they seem to want to go in a more subdued, family-oriented direction. Much like 2010, I hesitate to believe that it will be successful, but unlike 2010, they don’t have to cancel everything, they only have to make subtle changes (much like how they did with this show) and see if that works better.

3. Supergirl (2.167 million 0.8)- The crossovers did well last week, but they didn’t do much to help any other show on the network. That doesn’t mean they will stop trying to do them whenever they can.

4. Supernatural (1.431 million 0.4)- There is really nothing else to say except that the show will go on as long as everyone involved wants it to go on. The numbers indicate that the show isn’t in any danger and the show is so old that it has earned the right to always have a spot waiting if it wants it.

5. Black Lightning (1.129 million 0.4)- Now that the fall season is over, it’s time to prepare for the dizzying schedule changes that will come in the winter and spring. This show will move to Mondays in January and it will stay there until the end of the season (meaning Legends of Tomorrow will be forced into another extended hiatus).

6. Teen Mom: Young & Pregnant (573,000 0.3)- This is another show where the numbers alone say that the show probably doesn’t deserve another season, but the environment it airs in might save it. It really hasn’t done too well behind Teen Mom, but MTV can’t air it on its own. If they do another season, it really would be in their best interest to not bring it back too soon.

7. Legacies (1.049 million 0.3)- As with Black Lightning, this show would be in serious danger if not for the fact that it is not the only show averaging that 0.3 demo. That 0.3 seems to be the float line. Everything at and above the line will be saved and everything below that line is at the mercy of the network’s needs.

8. Married to Medicine (608,000 0.2)- I’m getting very tired of keeping up with the schedule changes. It started on Sundays, moved to Saturdays, moved to Fridays and for the final two parts of the reunion special, it will move back to Sundays. Shows aren’t supposed to move that much. These days, it is especially problematic because people like to record their shows to watch later. Kind of difficult to keep up with that if it keeps moving every 2 or 3 weeks.

9. RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars (513,000 0.2)- I don’t have a problem with the day or the time this show is on. I find that VH1 may have made a mistake by premiering this in mid-December. I tend not to agree with starting shows in December. That’s the best time to just fill holes with specials and start fresh the first week of January.

10. Real Housewives of Dallas (659,000 0.2)- There are two things that I believe have played a major part in saving this show thus far. The first is that it doesn’t appear that Bravo wants to cancel any of their current Real Housewives shows (perhaps from lingering regret over canceling DC and Miami too early despite both shows having better numbers). The second reason is the overall ratings declines across cable. Networks now seem afraid of canceling marginally rated shows. They don’t want to carry dead weight, but what can you classify as dead weight if no one has hits anymore?
