NBC 2012 Season in Review

Last but not least there's NBC.

Undecided/Still airing: Bent, Harry’s Law, Awake, Are You There Chelsea, Whitney, 30 Rock, Community, Parenthood, Up All Night, Law & Order: SVU, Parks & Recreation, Rock Center, Dateline, The Biggest Loser, Fear Factor, It’s Worth What?, The Marriage Ref, Minute to Win It, The Sing-Off, Who’s Still Standing, The Voice, Celebrity Apprentice, Fashion Star, Escape Routes, Betty White’s: Off Their Rockers and Who Do You Think You Are?

Renewed: Grimm, Smash, Sunday Night Football

Canceled: Prime Suspect, Best Friends Forever, The Firm, Free Agents and The Playboy Club

Final Season: Chuck

Thoughts: NBC is in really bad shape this year. That’s why there are so few early renewals. It’s also why NBC is the hardest network to predict what they will do. It’s a given they will pick up a lot of new shows but what is not known is if they will pick up new shows just to fill the holes they already have or if they will pick up new shows because they are planning to execute a major bloodbath during their upfronts.

Popular thought says without a doubt The Voice (It’s rumored that this may get a 2 cycle renewal for next season), The Biggest Loser, Dateline, Law & Order: SVU, Celebrity Apprentice and The Office will be back. Most people believe 30 Rock, Community and Parenthood will be back as well.

Bent, Awake, The Marriage Ref, Who’s Still Standing, It’s Worth What? and Escape Routes all have no chance whatsoever of being renewed. Harry’s Law and Rock Center have atrocious ratings and neither deserve to come back but there’s a small chance NBC may save one or both (Harry’s Law because of its high number of viewers despite its painfully low demo and Rock Center because it’s filler and this is an election year so they will probably have some primetime specials devoted to that anyway).

Up All Night, Whitney and Are You There Chelsea also have bad ratings and it’s very likely that 2 of the 3 shows get canceled. If that happens it’s believed that Whitney has the best chance of being saved.

As far as the reality shows go, The Sing Off and Fear Factor are equally in limbo but it’s likely that one will be renewed to air during the winter break (Fear Factor had the better ratings between the two though The Sing Off failed because it was promoted to a fall show where it fared worse instead of remaining a winter break show where it performed much better).

Things don’t look all that great for Fashion Star because its ratings were bad without The Voice as a lead-in and they haven’t improved at all since it’s gotten The Voice as a lead-in. Betty White’s: Off Their Rockers, Minute to Win It and Who Do You Think You Are? could all go either way depending on if NBC decides they don’t have too much faith in their shows and they need a quick and cheap backup plan (chances are they will so you can’t count any of these shows out).
