10 Ratings Blurbs: 3/13/18 Edition

American Idol isn't the only revival of a former ratings juggernaut returning. There's another one coming in a couple of days that will probably headline next week's post.

1. The Voice (Tuesday: 10.091 million 2.1; Monday: 11.872 million 2.4)- Get used to all those ratings comparisons sure to come between this show and American Idol. This show should come out on top, but the major weakness with this show is that the beginning of the season is always the highest rated portion of the season.

2. American Idol (Sunday: 10.483 million 2.3; Monday: 8.410 million 1.8)- This is it. This is the gamble that ABC waited all season for. These first results only tell us that the gamble isn’t an immediate failure. What we don’t know is if the sheen of the reboot will wear off in a few weeks. That could certainly happen, and if it does, ABC will be judged harshly for it. They paid a lot of money and dramatically changed or compromised a lot of their own shows to revive a show that has only been off the air for a few years just to keep FOX from reviving this show to help their own fledgling schedule.

3. Love & Hip Hop (1.736 million 0.9)- This show was in uncharted territory from the beginning of the season. Before this show, VH1 had never had a reality show go beyond 7 seasons. This show has now completed its 8th season. The season average is off quite a bit from last season (something in the area of 600k viewers). That is not weird for this show. It has a history of going through wild ratings swings and still managing to finish as a top 5 show. Much like Real Housewives of Orange County on Bravo, this is the first show in the franchise. That means it is also the show that VH1 is most comfortable with taking risks on. They know that any experimental changes they do here can give them information on whether they can try those same things with the other shows. I expect it to be back, I’m just not sure when it could be back.

4. Teen Mom: Young & Pregnant (666,000 0.4)- I see this as MTV’s way of creatively not calling the show Teen Mom 4. I say that because the first two iterations have been on so long that the girls are well beyond their teenage years. Also, it would remind people that Teen Mom 3 only lasted for one season. Times have changed and expectations are different. For this show, these numbers are not a good sign for the future of this show.

5. The Haves and the Have Nots (2.025 million 0.4)- The ratings have not been as high as previous seasons. That’s okay. There are still a lot of episodes left to churn through and the numbers have been quite stable. It’s a quiet show and it continues to perform well for OWN.

6. Chicago Med (7.028 million 1.4)- This is currently the highest rated show of the NBC Chicago trio, but I have a couple things to say about it. First, it is only the highest rated because it is on the best night of the three shows. Second, its lead-in, This Is Us, is wrapping up its season tonight (this show will be off tonight because NBC wants to give this show’s new lead-in, Rise, a boost behind the This Is Us finale). Keep in mind that only 2-3 tenths in the demo is the difference between this show and the other two shows. If it falls to that level, this show won’t be in cancellation jeopardy, but it could be a strong candidate to move to another night next season (NBC’s current schedule structure makes that unlikely because to remain at 10pm, it could only move to Sunday or Monday night. Monday brings the support from The Voice, but for several years, NBC has used it to launch new shows and those shows have shown that they can’t survive being away from The Voice. A move here would indicate that NBC is tired of being fooled by new shows that look decent in the first half of season 1. A move to Sundays means that the new season can’t premiere before January).

7. Arrow (1.278 million (0.4)- It’s starting to become obvious that this show is getting a little long in the tooth. That doesn’t mean I think the show will be canceled. Honestly, I believe that they will renew nearly all of their shows again, not because they can, but because they announced a few weeks ago that they will take Sunday nights back from the local affiliates next season. With two extra hours and a committed goal to carrying an ambitious roster of shows, it’s very hard to see an immediate future without this show even though the ratings are starting to indicate that perhaps, people need to start thinking about how to end the show.

8. The Walking Dead (6.604 million 2.8)- Not only did this not recover from last week’s lows, the numbers managed to slip a little lower. There’s no excuses to be made here. The impervious glow around the show is certainly gone. In this TV landscape, the numbers still make it an above average cable show, but these aren’t numbers that can carry a network and shield it from its shortcomings elsewhere.

9. Black Lightning (1.458 million 0.5)- As we’ve gone deeper into the season, the gap between this show and The Flash has grown. It’s not an extensive gap, mostly because The Flash has also seen ratings declines this half of the season. My overall view of CW shows that I explained in my Arrow analysis applies here too. I think it’s on track for renewal because they have a little more space and the numbers are about even with a lot of their other shows.

10. Marriage Boot Camp Reality Stars: Family Edition (415,000 0.2)- It might be time to start thinking that this may be the new ratings normal for the show. It gives WE a bit of a paradox. The numbers are less than half of what it was at its peak and it can no longer compete with their Thursday roster (most of which has also seen diminished ratings), but outside of Mama June’s show, it seems like this show still comes out ahead of everything else they throw on Friday nights.
