10 Ratings Blurbs 5/21/13 Edition

Mostly broadcast shows on this list because of the finales. Expect next week's list to be more of the same as well [Full List Here].

1. Scandal (9.12 million 3.2)- I’m sure that this time last year nobody (myself included) thought that this show would gain about 2 million viewers and 1.2 demo points in 1 year. That is just something that doesn’t happen very often and especially not with broadcast shows. This is one of the few shows that is in a good place going into next season.

2. Beauty and the Beast (1.26 million 0.5)- There are two opinions of the ratings of this show. There are those who believe that this is the floor and as long as it can hold on to this when it moves to Mondays next season then The CW will deal because it will be acceptable. Then there are the people who believe that it’s only getting numbers like these because of The Vampire Diaries and the numbers will look quite ugly next season. I’m in the latter group and I’m not sold that this show won’t sink down below 1 million viewers or hit a 0.3 demo next season.

3. So You Think You Can Dance (Tuesday: 5.12 million, 1.9; Wednesday: 7.02 million 2.3)- One of these is helped by American Idol and one isn’t. What some people have already mentioned though is that both of these numbers are down from last season’s premiere and the ratings weren’t seen as being very good last season.

4. Supernatural (2.31 million 1.0)- Last week many fans noted that The CW is moving the show back to its original timeslot next season. Seeing as how nothing has worked there in years, I do believe the fans will show up and watch the show on a day and time they grew accustomed to in the beginning and the numbers it gets should be a definite improvement for the network.

5. Elementary (8.98 million 2.0)- If this were a 10pm drama for any network except CBS then these numbers really would be pretty good. These numbers are suspect at best and at this moment I’m not sure it survives beyond next season (but I also believe that CBS is going to look at canceling a lot of shows next season).

6. The Mindy Project (2.57 million 1.3)- If I had a list of 5 returning shows that I don’t think will make it to the end of next season this one is certainly in the top 2. I’m really not sure the show gets to November to be honest. These numbers are too low, it’s in a relatively good spot (behind New Girl) and unless the first hour of the comedy block collapses then this show is a goner because they have far too many shows waiting in the wings for a spot on the schedule.

7. T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle (2.537 million 1.4)- I have to admit this caught me off guard because after 2 extremely long seasons I didn’t think this season would only have 7 episodes. It makes me wonder if they were really just leftover season 2 episodes that VH1 held on to and then threw on air knowing that all but one other show has struggled terribly this year.

8. Arrow (2.77 million 0.9)- So The CW isn’t going to waste any time with trying to use this show to help another show. I can see the point because they have tried to use The Vampire Diaries for the same thing and still nothing works (I don’t see it working next year either). The good thing though is that Arrow is a decent second option so maybe the pairing will work for them.

9. Golden Boy (6.91 million 1.2)- Unsurprisingly here is another midseason show that came in and just met its demise at the end of the season. I know some people ask why bother trying to introduce a show after February but look at Scandal. Some shows catch on and others don’t. That’s just the way it is.

10. American Idol (Wednesday: 12.11 million 3.0; Thursday: 14.31 million 3.6)- At this point the show can get rid of all the judges and there won’t be anyone attractive enough to make the ratings go up again. When the show focused more on the individual star power of the judges over the contestants themselves then the show itself became beyond saving and that’s just a reality that FOX is going to have to accept.
